Set Default GST Rate for New & Custom Products

Updated Apr 13, 20261 min read

You can configure a default GST rate in GST Pro so that it is automatically applied to:

  • New products

  • Custom products (added manually to orders)

This helps ensure consistent taxation without needing to manually set GST each time.

What This Feature Does

Once enabled:

  • Every new product will use the default GST rate

  • Any custom line item added to an order will automatically have GST applied

  • Reduces manual errors and saves time

How to Set Default GST Rate

  1. Go to GST Pro in your Shopify admin

  2. Open Settings

  3. Click on Taxes

  4. Scroll down to Default GST Rate

Set Your GST Percentage

  • Enter your preferred GST rate

    • Example: 18%

  • Save after making the change

How It Works

  • The selected GST rate becomes the default tax rate

  • It is automatically applied to:

    • Newly created products

    • Custom items added during order creation

Verify the Setup

To confirm everything is working:

  1. Create a test order

  2. Add a custom product or a new item

  3. Generate/print the invoice

You should see the default GST rate applied to the item.

Important Notes

  • This setting applies only to new or custom products

  • Existing products with defined GST rates will not be overridden

  • You can still manually adjust GST for specific products if needed

Tips

  • Use a standard rate like 18% if most of your products fall under it

  • Always test with a sample order after making changes

Summary

  • Set a default GST rate in Settings → Taxes

  • Applies automatically to new and custom products

  • Helps maintain consistency and reduce manual effort
